CCNA Tips Feat. Jeremy Cioara!! - CCENT | CCNP

About this video

Filmed while literally hiking a mountain (a butte) at CBT Nuggets headquarters, Chuck interviews trainer Jeremy Cioara, whose CBT Nuggets CCENT videos Chuck used when he began his network engineering journey in 2013 on the helpdesk, barely scraping by, working through CCENT and then ICND2 toward the CCNA. The mountain is his analogy for the CCNA. Jeremy’s first tip is to know the concepts, not just the commands — to be able to put the puzzle together. Chuck expands: the goal is not the certificate but actually being able to do the job, and warns against ’exam brain’ and brain dumps, which produce ‘paper CCNAs’ who freeze at a command line. He says the revised CCNA version 3.0 (ICND1 3.0, from 2016 as he dates it) can no longer be passed by memorizing terms and commands; Cisco tests real understanding of things like spanning tree, subnetting and routing protocol convergence. Jeremy’s other advice is a summit mindset — keep your eye on where you are going through discouragement — and to fall in love with the technology, summarized as ‘you are good at what you love and you will love what you are good at.’ Chuck adds his own memory of passing ICND2 the day before his second daughter was born, and urges labbing daily with Packet Tracer, GNS3 or a physical lab to make learning fun.

Key takeaways

• Jeremy Cioara’s headline tip: know the concepts and how the puzzle fits together, not just memorized commands
• Study to become a network engineer, not just to pass — brain dumps create ‘paper CCNAs’ who cannot perform on the job
• Chuck says CCNA version 3.0 requires genuine understanding of topics like spanning tree, subnetting and routing convergence
• Use a summit mindset: expect discouragement, keep written goals and rewards visible, and keep your eye on the destination
• Fall in love with the technology by labbing and playing with it daily using Packet Tracer, GNS3 or a physical lab
