FREE CCNA // What is a Network? // Day 0

About this video

This is Day 0 of NetworkChuck’s free CCNA course, sponsored by Boson Software, using a Call of Duty bullet to explain what a network is. He traces the shot from his computer through an Ethernet cable, wall jack, switch, router and firewall and modem, out across the internet — which he describes as many routers hopping across distance — to game servers and then to his brother’s modem, router, switch and console. He then builds up networking from first principles: two computers linked directly, a switch to connect many devices, a second switch creating a second network, and a router to let the two networks talk. He explains a firewall as blocking what should not pass and allowing the good traffic, and a wireless access point as casting the network over airwaves, noting most homes combine modem, firewall, router, switch and access point in one device while companies use larger separate devices. He defines the CCNA as the Cisco Certified Network Associate and a network engineer as the person who designs and keeps such networks running, and says the course will release one video a week covering every CCNA topic with Boson labs and practice questions.

Key takeaways

• A LAN is the local network in the home; the WAN/internet beyond it is essentially many interconnected routers and networks
• Switches connect multiple devices within a network; routers connect different networks to each other
• A firewall’s job is to block traffic that should not enter or leave and allow legitimate traffic
• Home networks usually combine modem, router, switch, firewall and wireless access point in one device; enterprises separate them
• CCNA is the Cisco Certified Network Associate, presented as the entry certification for becoming a network engineer
