i bet you can't do this (because you still suck at subnetting)

About this video

The creator teaches decimal-to-binary and binary-to-decimal conversion for IP addresses as a foundation for subnetting. An IPv4 address is 32 bits, made of four octets of eight bits each, and eight bits make one byte. In binary, 1 means on and 0 means off. Conversion uses a powers-of-two chart written right to left as 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, built either from powers of two or by starting at 1 and doubling. To convert binary to decimal, add the chart values where the bit is 1: he works through octets that become 192, 168, 1, and 21. To convert decimal to binary, work across the chart asking whether each value can be subtracted from the remaining number, turning the bit on if it can and off if it cannot; he demonstrates this with 172, 16, 34, and 3. He stresses that the skill feels heavy at first and needs repeated practice, and points viewers to extra practice at his academy. A sponsor segment for SafeDNS describes cloud DNS filtering by category for home and business networks.

Key takeaways

• An IPv4 address is 32 bits: four octets of eight bits each
• Build the chart 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 by doubling from 1
• Binary to decimal: add chart values wherever the bit is 1
• Decimal to binary: turn a bit on only if its value can be subtracted
• Binary conversion is presented as a building block for subnetting
