Kali Linux APPS on Windows in 5min (WSLg)
About this video
The creator shows how to run Linux GUI apps natively inside Windows using WSL2 and, on Windows 11, WSLg. Requirements stated are Windows 10 version 2004 or higher (build 19041 or higher) or Windows 11, checked with winver, plus virtualization enabled in BIOS — SVM on AMD or Intel VT on Intel systems. Installation is a single elevated command prompt command, ‘wsl –install’, followed by a reboot; Ubuntu installs by default and prompts for a Linux username and password. On Windows 11 the install includes GUI app support, so after apt update and installing GIMP, the Linux app appears in the Windows Start menu and runs in its own window like a native app. To add other distributions he uses ‘wsl –list’ and ‘wsl –list –online’, but warns not to install Kali via ‘wsl –install -d kali-linux’ because that pulls an outdated version; instead he installs Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store. He then installs the Win-KeX package inside Kali with a sudo apt install command, which on Windows 11 populates the Start menu with Kali tools and on Windows 10 provides a full Kali desktop session via VNC, exited with F8 and disconnect.
Key takeaways
- Check prerequisites first: Windows 10 2004 / build 19041+ or Windows 11 via winver, and BIOS virtualization (SVM or Intel VT) enabled.
- Install WSL2 with one admin command, wsl –install, reboot, then set the Ubuntu username and password on first launch.
- WSLg is Windows 11 only in the video: Linux GUI apps installed via apt, such as GIMP and gedit, appear in Start and run as Windows windows.
- Do not install Kali from the WSL online list due to an outdated version; install Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store instead.
- Install Win-KeX inside Kali to expose Kali’s apps on Windows 11 or get a full Kali desktop on Windows 10.
