Kali Linux on Windows in 5min (WSL 2 GUI)
About this video
He shows how to run Kali Linux on Windows 10 as an app using WSL 2, which he says is better than WSL 1 because it uses a real Linux kernel, and claims the whole setup, including a GUI, takes under five minutes. He first checks the Windows version with winver, noting version 2004 or higher is required, then uses elevated PowerShell to enable WSL and the Virtual Machine Platform feature with restarts in between, downloads and installs the WSL 2 kernel update package, and sets WSL 2 as the default. He installs Kali Linux from the Microsoft Store, launches it to create a username and password, and verifies with wsl –list –verbose that Kali is running version 2. To add the desktop, he runs apt update and upgrade, installs kali-desktop-xfce and xrdp, starts the xrdp service, finds the WSL IP address, and connects with Windows Remote Desktop Connection to get the Kali GUI. He finishes by running theHarvester against a domain inside Kali to show it works.
Key takeaways
- WSL 2 requires Windows 10 version 2004 or higher — check with winver and update first if needed
- Setup sequence in admin PowerShell: enable WSL, enable Virtual Machine Platform, install the kernel update, set WSL 2 as default
- Kali installs directly from the Microsoft Store and runs like a Windows app; verify with wsl –list –verbose
- For a GUI, install kali-desktop-xfce plus xrdp inside Kali, start xrdp, then connect via Remote Desktop to the WSL IP
- He verifies the install by running theHarvester OSINT tool inside the Kali GUI
