Amazon Just Broke the Internet - Here’s What Really Happened

About this video

RJ breaks down a major Amazon Web Services outage that he says locked millions of people out of their favorite apps. He lists services affected: Amazon itself, Amazon Alexa, Fortnite and Epic’s online services, Clash Royale, Snapchat, and AWS, plus — per the article he reads — Perplexity, Airtable, Canva, Zapier, and the McDonald’s app. He says the disruption began around 3:00 a.m. Eastern (midnight his Pacific time), that he personally hit problems sending messages and watching his Amazon sales data disappear, and that Amazon reported the underlying DNS issue had been fully mitigated, with recovery starting to bring services back around 1:00 p.m. Eastern. He stresses, from his understanding, that Amazon was not hacked. Using Down Detector, he shows large spikes in reported problems (around 15,000 and 12,000 reports on the pages he views) and says the East Coast seemed hit hardest. His advice: expect lingering issues for up to the next 48 hours even as services return, don’t sit refreshing repeatedly, focus on offline/backend work you can control, and give it until tomorrow for things to normalize.

Key takeaways

• He attributes the outage to an AWS problem — Amazon reported an underlying DNS issue that was later fully mitigated — and says it was not a hack, to his understanding.
• Affected services he names include Amazon, Alexa, Fortnite/Epic, Clash Royale, Snapchat, Perplexity, Airtable, Canva, Zapier, and the McDonald’s app.
• He places the start around 3:00 a.m. Eastern / midnight Pacific and says recovery was underway by about 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
• He uses Down Detector to check real-time report spikes and user comments rather than assuming the problem is his own computer.
• His practical advice during an outage: stop refreshing, expect residual issues for a day or two, and focus on offline work you can control.
