How To Make A Dot To Dot Book - (Amazon KDP Paperback Puzzle Book Publishing)

About this video

RJ Martinez walks through making a dot-to-dot puzzle book interior for Amazon KDP. He stresses starting with a line drawing with no color, and strongly recommends using a custom line drawing rather than one downloaded from a service, because shared illustrations create competition with other publishers using the same image. Before creating anything, he advises researching a sub-niche with proven demand but little competition, showing dot-to-dot books for kids ages three to five as an example of reading a niche’s existing sellers. His free, web-based process is: upload the line drawing to imgbb.com, copy the image address, paste it into picturedots.com, load the image, and manually trace dots around the outline. He cautions that more detailed drawings are harder and slower to trace and may suit adults rather than children. Once traced, you can hide the underlying image to preview the puzzle, then either download it as a PDF or screenshot it into a tool such as PowerPoint, Publisher, or InDesign to assemble the book interior for KDP or another platform. He presents this as a free jump-start method for beginners who cannot yet afford paid tools or outsourcing.

Key takeaways

• Start with an uncolored line drawing, and use a custom one — downloaded illustrations invite competition from publishers using the same image.
• Research first: find a dot-to-dot sub-niche with demand but little competition before choosing what drawings to create.
• Free workflow: host the drawing on imgbb.com, paste its image address into picturedots.com, and trace the outline with dots.
• Match detail level to the audience — highly detailed drawings take longer to trace and are harder, suiting adults more than young children.
• Export by downloading the finished puzzle as a PDF or screenshotting it into PowerPoint, Publisher, or InDesign to build the KDP interior.
