10 Common Mistakes You Might Be Making That Can Get Your KDP Account Banned | Kindle Publishing 2020

About this video

Sean lists 10 mistakes he says can get a KDP account banned, arguing they all come down to creating a misleading customer experience. They are: 1) keyword stuffing in title, subtitle, series or pen name with terms not reflected in the content; 2) putting a book in irrelevant categories to chase a bestseller badge — he says Amazon emailed him warning his account could be closed for this; 3) ripping off another book’s title; 4) making a pen name imitate famous authors, illustrated by a name mixing Robert Greene, Dale Carnegie, Daniel Goleman and Travis Bradberry; 5) having multiple KDP accounts under the same entity (one per separate entity is fine); 6) using trademarked terms like Instant Pot, South Beach Diet, Fortnite or Pokemon; 7) plagiarism, including ghostwriters reselling manuscripts and using text encoding to evade Grammarly/Copyscape checks; 8) bundling the same books too many times — he limits reuse to 2-3 times and lists bundle contents; 9) uploading public domain books and PLR; and 10) click farming via front-of-book links to the back to inflate KDP Select page reads. His conclusion is to stop gaming the system and publish legitimately.

Key takeaways

• Most ban risks stem from a misleading customer experience, not a single technical rule
• Do not keyword-stuff titles/subtitles or place books in irrelevant categories for a bestseller badge
• Only one KDP account per entity is allowed; separate companies can each have one
• Vet ghostwriters for plagiarism and encoded text, not just Copyscape/Grammarly results
• Reuse a book in bundles only 2-3 times and disclose bundle contents in the description
