Amazon KDP for Absolute Beginners - Watch This BEFORE You Start

About this video

A beginner overview of Amazon KDP from Sean Dollwet, who claims over $1.7 million in royalties and more than 2,000 students, with an explicit disclaimer that results are not guaranteed and this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. He explains KDP as uploading two files, a cover and an interior, for free; Amazon reviews the book within 24 to 72 hours, then prints and ships paperbacks only when ordered, handling shipping and customer service, while ebooks and audiobooks are also possible. In his worked paperback example, a 100-page book priced at $15 earns $6.70 per sale at a 60% royalty rate after $2.30 in printing costs, and royalties are paid monthly on a 60-day delay. He covers low-, medium- and high-content books, notes non-writers can use ghostwriters or AI with careful editing and non-designers can hire cover help on Fiverr, and gives standard trim sizes such as 6x9 for text books and 8.5x11 for workbooks and coloring books, plus bleed and margin basics. Sales, he says, come from a mix of Amazon’s organic traffic, social media videos, reviews and Amazon ads, creating a snowball as rankings rise.

Key takeaways

• KDP is free to join with no listing or monthly fees; Amazon takes its cut only when a sale occurs
• Print-on-demand removes inventory, printing, shipping and customer-service work from the publisher
• Royalty math matters: in his example a $15, 100-page paperback nets $6.70 after printing costs, paid on a 60-day delay
• Low-content books are easiest but most competitive; high-content books take the most effort and face the least competition
• Every production step can be done yourself or outsourced, and marketing through social content, reviews and Amazon ads drives the ranking snowball
