How to Format Your Book for eBook and Print For FREE With Reedsy

About this video

This tutorial shows a free, simple way to format a book for ebook and print using Reedsy, transcribed in the audio as ‘reezy.’ Sean Dollwet introduces himself with the creator’s claim that he built a multiple six-figure KDP business he sold for $820,000 and is now building a second account. Preparation happens in Google Docs or Word: mark the title with the Title style and subtitle with Subtitle style rather than just bolding text, mark every chapter title as Heading 1, use Heading 2 and Heading 3 for subheadings, hyperlink links, and insert real page breaks instead of blank spaces, then download as a .docx file. In Reedsy he signs up as an author, adds a new title, imports the .docx, adds subtitle and settings under Manage, deletes the automatically created empty chapter, and adds the generated copyright page and a table of contents based on Heading 1 styles. On export he chooses drop caps and a Classic template, downloads the ebook as EPUB - MOBI is not needed for KDP - and the paperback as a print-ready PDF, stressing trim size must match the cover (5x8 example). The result is simple, not professional-grade; Fiverr formatting is an alternative.

Key takeaways

• Formatting succeeds or fails in the source document: use real Title, Subtitle, and Heading 1 styles for chapters, not just bold and larger fonts
• Use Insert > Page Break to end pages and chapters; extra spaces and blank lines will not be recognised on import
• In Reedsy, delete the auto-created chapter, add subtitle and metadata in Book Settings, and generate the copyright page and table of contents from your headings
• Export the ebook as EPUB for KDP and the paperback as the print-ready PDF, making sure interior trim size exactly matches your cover trim size
• Reedsy formatting is free and functional but simple; outsource to a vetted Fiverr formatter if you want a more polished interior
