How to Format Your Book for KDP Print 5x8 in Less Than 5 Minutes!

About this video

This is a short, step-by-step screen tutorial on formatting a manuscript for a 5x8-inch KDP paperback, presented as a follow-on to an earlier formatting video. The creator first opens Layout, then Margins, then Custom Margins, entering the margin values he uses (given in centimetres, with a note that they can be converted to inches), selecting mirrored margins, applying them to the whole document, and confirming. Next he sets the page size: because the custom size option does not appear in his size menu, he goes through Page Setup and Manage Custom Sizes, entering 5 by 8 inches — 12.7 by 20.32 centimetres — if the document is not already set up. He then inserts page numbers positioned at the bottom of the page on the outside. Finally he updates the table of contents via References and Custom Table of Contents, keeping page numbers shown and unchecking the hyperlink option. He credits the method to a fellow creator and promotes that creator’s keyword research course before trailing a follow-up video on formatting a different trim size.

Key takeaways

• Set custom margins first, choose mirrored margins, and apply them to the whole document
• If custom size is missing from the Size menu, create the 5x8 trim (12.7 x 20.32 cm) through Page Setup and Manage Custom Sizes
• Insert page numbers at the bottom of the page in the outside position for a print paperback
• Refresh the table of contents with page numbers shown and hyperlinks unchecked so it matches print formatting
• The whole 5x8 setup is presented as a quick repeat of the same workflow used for other trim sizes
