THIS is Why Your Books Don't Sell on Amazon KDP (Crucial Mistake)

About this video

Sean argues a major reason books do not sell on KDP is not writing to market: authors create books from intuition or personal passion without data showing customers want that topic. He says this is common for beginners and especially for fiction writers who spend years on a dream project, only for it to flop because the market did not want it. A passion project is fine as a hobby, he says, but as a business you need niche and keyword research first to answer two questions: is there demand, and can you compete? He demonstrates validation by searching Amazon for a topic like mental toughness, checking competitors’ Best Sellers Rank with the free DS Amazon Quickview plugin or on the product page itself, and interpreting the rank. Lower is better; he says anything below 30000 BSR is good for the Kindle Store and anything below 100000 is pretty good for the paperback bookstore. If competitors are already selling, the topic is proven; trying a completely unproven topic is usually a flop rather than a home run.

Key takeaways

• Write to market, not just to personal intuition or passion, if the book is meant to be a business
• Use keyword research to validate both demand and whether you can compete in a topic
• Check competitors’ Best Sellers Rank on Amazon, using the free DS Amazon Quickview plugin or the product page
• Sean treats below 30000 BSR as good for the Kindle Store and below 100000 as pretty good for paperback
• Prefer a topic already proven by selling competitors over an untested idea nobody has published before
