Mary Teal Scott-Bosworth was born June 16, 1984 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has spoken openly across hundreds of videos about severe childhood abuse she experienced within a closed religious community. She changed her name to Teal Swan in her mid-twenties and began her public teaching career in 2011 with a single YouTube channel focused on answering spiritual and psychological questions.

Her audience grew rapidly. By her mid-thirties she was one of the most-watched spiritual teachers on YouTube, with a direct, confrontational teaching style that is both praised as unusually honest and criticized as intense or destabilizing depending on the viewer. She has been the subject of a Gizmodo investigative podcast (The Gateway, 2018) and multiple critical press pieces. She has addressed the controversies publicly.

Swan published The Completion Process in 2016 — a step-by-step trauma-integration methodology designed to be used either alone or with a trained facilitator. The book has been translated into multiple languages and the Completion Process has been adopted as the primary methodology inside her practitioner-certification program, which has trained hundreds of facilitators worldwide.

Swan founded the Philia Center in Costa Rica as a retreat and teaching site, runs Teal Tribe as her online community, and continues weekly YouTube releases. Her second book Shadows Before Dawn (2015) and Hunger of the Pine (2020, a novel) round out her published work.
