VA System Failures: A Caretaker’s Perspective
Dear Secretary Doug Collins and VA Leadership Team:
As a VA caretaker navigating the labyrinth of veterans’ healthcare, I write to highlight critical systemic failures that continue to plague our nation’s heroes. While the VA’s mission is noble, its execution often falls short, leaving veterans and their caregivers fighting battles they shouldn’t have to face.
The Screening Gap Crisis
Veterans exposed to Agent Orange, burn pits, asbestos, and contaminated water face heightened lifetime risks for numerous cancers and chronic conditions. Yet the VA applies standard civilian age cutoffs for critical screenings like prostate cancer tests, lung imaging, and liver function evaluation. A 71-year-old Vietnam veteran with documented Agent Orange exposure is denied routine PSA screening despite his elevated risk continuing well beyond civilian guidelines.
The Caregiver’s Burden
As a caretaker, I’ve witnessed firsthand how these systemic failures compound. Each denied test, lost form, or delayed appointment isn’t just an administrative issue—it represents potential missed diagnoses and deteriorating health for veterans who served our country. The emotional and practical toll on caregivers is immense as we attempt to navigate a system that seems designed to obstruct rather than facilitate care. The Caregiver Support Program, while well-intentioned, suffers from inconsistent implementation across facilities. One caregiver receives comprehensive training and respite care, while another with identical circumstances receives minimal support—often determined by geographical location rather than need.
Technology That Hinders Rather Than Helps
The VA’s technological infrastructure remains fragmented, with veterans often required to submit the same information repeatedly across different departments. Medical records don’t seamlessly transfer between facilities, appointment systems crash regularly, and the much-touted electronic health record modernization continues to face implementation challenges.
Call to Action
@SecVetAffairs, @DeptVetAffairs, @VeteransHealth, @VAVetBenefits—we need immediate action:- Implement exposure-specific screening protocols that extend beyond civilian age guidelines
- Streamline authorization processes with clear timelines and accountability measures
- Standardize caregiver support services across all facilities
- Create a truly integrated records system that eliminates redundant paperwork
- Establish a dedicated ombudsman office for caregiver concerns
- Conduct regular listening sessions with caregivers to identify practical solutions Our veterans deserve better than bureaucratic red tape and outdated policies. They answered the call to serve—it’s time for the VA to truly answer their needs.
