Abraham-Hicks (Esther Hicks)

Ask and It Is Given, The Law of Attraction, Source of the Modern Manifestation Movement

Esther Hicks is an American inspirational speaker who, together with her late husband Jerry Hicks, became the original source of the Law of Attraction teaching that has shaped the modern manifestation movement. Esther says she channels the collective consciousness she and Jerry have called 'Abraham' since 1985. Their books — Ask and It Is Given (2004), The Law of Attraction (2006), Money and the Law of Attraction (2008), The Vortex (2009), and others — have sold millions of copies. Abraham's teachings directly inspired Rhonda Byrne's The Secret (2006), and Esther was a featured teacher in the original DVD version before being removed from later editions during a publishing dispute.

About Abraham-Hicks (Esther Hicks)

Esther Hicks was born March 5, 1948 in Coalville, Utah, and raised in a Mormon family. She married Jerry Hicks in 1980 — Jerry was a career Amway distributor and motivational teacher who had studied Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich for decades and built his early career on those principles. The couple’s life together was defined from early on by a shared commitment to personal development, prosperity teaching, and what Jerry called “the study of what works.”

The inflection point came in 1985. Esther and Jerry were introduced to channeling work through friends, attended sessions with a channel named Sheila Gillette, and in late 1985 Esther herself began receiving what she described as a nonphysical consciousness she and Jerry identified as “Abraham” — a group consciousness rather than a single entity. Esther says she does not lose consciousness during channeling but allows Abraham’s communication to flow through her in what she describes as a feeling state of alignment. Jerry began hosting small gatherings where people could ask Abraham questions and Esther would deliver the responses.

Over the next four decades, Esther and Jerry (until his death in 2011) toured North America relentlessly, holding weekly Law of Attraction workshops in hotel ballrooms from Alaska to Florida. The workshops follow a consistent format: Esther opens with a short meditation, enters the channeling state, and spends several hours answering individual questions from audience members live and unscripted. Hundreds of hours of these workshop Q&A exchanges have been recorded, transcribed, and published on YouTube, Spotify, and the Hicks’ own Abraham-Hicks Publications.

Their books — Ask and It Is Given (2004), The Law of Attraction (2006), Money and the Law of Attraction (2008), The Vortex (2009), The Astonishing Power of Emotions (2007), The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent (2006), Sara and the Foreverness of Friends of a Feather (children’s series), and several more — have been published by Hay House under Louise Hay’s direct support and have sold millions of copies in dozens of languages. The central teachings introduce the Emotional Guidance Scale (a ladder of vibrational states), the Vortex (the inner alignment state in which manifestation flows effortlessly), and the specific practice of reaching for a better-feeling thought as a moment-to-moment discipline.

Rhonda Byrne, the producer of The Secret, first encountered Abraham-Hicks through the book Ask and It Is Given. Esther was a featured teacher in the original 2006 DVD version of The Secret. Contractual disputes during the later book-version rollout led to Esther’s segments being removed from subsequent editions — a controversy that has been the subject of significant discussion but that did not slow the expansion of the Abraham-Hicks audience, which grew rapidly in the post-Secret years.

Jerry Hicks died of leukemia in November 2011. Esther has continued the workshop tour — now with her family members and colleagues in supporting roles — and as of 2026 is still delivering weekly live events.

Abraham’s central teaching, compressed: you are a vibrational being in a vibrational universe. Thoughts vibrate. Emotions are the feedback system telling you whether your thoughts are aligned with your broader, non-physical self (“Source”) or not. You do not manifest what you want; you manifest what you vibrationally match. The work is therefore not to force outcomes but to deliberately reach for better-feeling thoughts, moment to moment, until alignment becomes your dominant state — at which point what you have asked for becomes what you receive.
