Single Leg Takedown For BJJ W/ Gi (Don't Double Butt Scoot)
My first experience in grappling was wrestling. In this video I show a wrestling based Single Leg Takedown For BJJ. Along with the basic grip fighting to set it up.
A single leg takedown works incredibly well in BJJ as long as you understand how to deal with the grips and have a proper setup.
Also, on a side note. Whether you prefer Judo style or Wrestling style takedowns. Learn takedowns! Even if you're not the best guy with takedowns, learn how to pull someone down to the ground and be o...

Grip For Single Leg Takedown In Gi Or No Gi
www.Chewjitsu.net
You don't want to be dependent on the gi in BJJ. It's fine to use it. But I believe it's important to have a game that translates well from gi to no gi and vice versa.
If you have a game that cannot move from one realm go to the other then your Brazilian jiu-jitsu is incomplete and not as effective as possible.
This is why I like rehashing some of my wrestling techniques to BJJ. There are a lot of crossovers to BJJ from wrestling if you know where to look and how to ada...

White Belt Takedown From The Knees
A white belt sent me a email asking about a takedown that someone could do from the knees. Again I don't believe you should put much focus on wrestling from the knees. But if you have to, the tips in this video will be helpful.
In the video I show a simple overhook and underhook adjustment to get a simple takedown from the knees that you can use for rolling.
I hope the video helps!

Standing Guillotine Choke Defense With 2 Takedowns
Not having a good standing guillotine choke defense in BJJ can be a nightmare if you like to go for takedowns. If you're guillotine choke defense lacks, you'll often find that you're more prone to being gun with your takedowns in fear of the choke.
You can see the first part of this video here : https://youtu.be/xdNLElSqFhw
In this video I demonstrate a couple of options you can use to defend against a standing guillotine choke using takedowns. I show a setup for a single leg takedown and ...

Simple Single Leg Setup Against Frankenstein Opponent
www.Chewjitsu.net
Single legs are by far my favorite type of takedowns. They're incredibly versatile. You can do them against smaller or larger opponents. They're easy to setup from high or low positions.
And most importantly for BJJ. I find them easy to setup in gi or no gi.
In this particular video I show how to do a simple single leg takedown setup when you have someone walking into you with their arms stretched out like Frankenstein.
In the gi this happens often. Two people walk in...

Blast Through The Guillotine Choke With A Double Leg Takedown
The Standing Guillotine Choke can be a nasty submission that makes people get gun shy with their takedowns.
Typically I've seen two common mistakes people make when they are coming in for a single leg or double leg takedown and get caught in a Guillotine Choke.
First is that they freeze. Instead of adjusting and making angles. They have a oh shit, deer in the headlights, moment and freeze up. Then they're submitted.
The other mistake I see really often when stuck in a standing guillotin...

Simple Guard Pull Counters And Adjustments
Our buddy Ricardo from Chile recently sent in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu related message asking about Guard Pull counters. He said that when people pull Guard on him, it creates a lot of trouble with his BJJ game.
I know that from personal experience as a Guard passer and a person who likes to move when I train or compete in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I don't like being in someone's Full Guard. Full Guard is not a good position for the top person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Esspecially if you're dealing ...

BJJ Single Leg vs Grips You Can’t Break
The single leg takedown is my personal favorite when it comes to takedowns using the legs. I can cut angles so I'm not directly against the person's power and it's incredibly effective. I've favored it as far back as high school.
Doing the single leg in BJJ can be difficult though. Especially when it comes to the gi. People can latch onto grips with the gi and fighting through the grips can be incredibly difficult. Often times good wrestlers who get into BJJ with no grip fighting ability ar...

Disable Grips for Double Leg Takedown in BJJ
Last week I showed a single leg takedown for BJJ vs strong established grips in the basic straight forward collar and sleeve position that many people end up in.
In this video I demonstrate a simple off balancing technique to weaken the grips momentarily to hit the double leg takedown in BJJ.
The double leg from wrestling is a great takedown if you time it correctly. Even if you’re up against a strong opponent in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. If you can time the movement right and react correctly ag...

Wresting for No Gi BJJ - Collar Tie Counter to Single Leg
Being able to grip fight effectively is important for gi and no gi. The actual techniques used changes, but the idea remains the same. Control the grips and you control the position.
I always put it this way. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. If you control the grips and are able to get the grips you need for your techniques. Then you can execute the techniques you been taught.
However, if you are unable to dominate grips and positioning. You'll always be hard pressed to secure the techniques you p...

How I Setup Takedowns in BJJ
When you're going for takedowns in BJJ. What are you looking for? How do you decide which BJJ takedown to use?
Do you have a systematic approach to takedowns? Do you focus on looking for certain grips or adjustments from your opponent, or do you just lock up and cross your fingers that something will happen?
In this video I give a little insight into what I'm looking for personally on my feet when going for takedowns. Mainly I talk about how I determine the BJJ takedown I plan to use.
Yo...

BJJ Wrestling Class Rolling at Derby City MMA
Wednesdays have recently become a Wrestling for BJJ class. During the class we go over several techniques from Wrestling or take down related movements that can be used in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Because it's No Gi BJJ, there are so many Wrestling style techniques that translate over so well for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
This video is primarily a highlight of the rolling portion of that BJJ takedown class at my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville, Ky.
I'm a huge proponent for takedowns. There's abso...

Angles to Counter the Guillotine Choke in BJJ
The double leg takedown can be an effective takedown in BJJ. But it does run the risk of putting you in a Guillotine Choke if you aren't careful. So having a good Guillotine Choke counter is really important if you plan to use takedowns in BJJ.
In this video I give some basic details on how a simple Guillotine works and how to counter it if you're shooting a Double Leg takedown.
Discussing the Guillotine Choke counters. I show the importance of understanding how the angles work. How cutti...

Ankle Pick Takedown for No Gi BJJ
I received several requests for a Ankle Pick for BJJ. So I wanted to cover it.
I've used the Ankle Pick for years. Starting back in High School wrestling as a teenager.
While I prefer the Ankle Pick in No Gi BJJ. I do use the Ankle Pick in Gi Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I just change the grips a bit since the kimono can get in the way.
It's worth noting that I've been able to use this takedown in BJJ competitions and tournaments as well as regular everyday rolling.
In this BJJ technique vide...

How to Setup a BJJ Takedown with the Gi (Focus on this 1st)
Finding takedowns from Wrestling for BJJ in the gi can tough. A lot of times the grips get in the way and stifle shots and traditional Wrestling style takedowns.
Recently, after a BJJ seminar I did in West Virginia at Lewisburg Jiu-jitsu. Myself and Alex, one of the coaches there went over some details on finding Wrestling style shots and entries in order to hit a BJJ takedown (like single legs and double legs) while wearing the gi.
Btw, If you live in or near Lewisburg or are ever in the...

Detailed Setup and Takedown for BJJ (Even with Guillotine Chokes)
The right control and setup can make all the difference with Takedowns. In this video I show a takedown I've used since High School Wrestling and still use as a Black Belt in BJJ.
This particular take down is going to me more focused on No Gi. And the grip and positioning will reflect that.
In Wrestling a basic name you could use for this would be a High Crotch to Double Leg.
I included a video from one of our no gi sessions of me using the setup. Not the exact same takedown, but the se...

How to Use Takedowns and Half Guard in a Fight with Strikes
Sign Up for my Free Ebook and "Almost Daily" Emails: http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/
How do you adjust Takedowns and Half Guard when strikes are involved? This is the question I received from my buddy Fisk.
And this is a question a lot of people have. How does Brazilian Jiu-jitsu translate into a fight situation. Whether a street fight or self defense situation or an MMA fight.
In this video I go over the basics of how to use a take down from Wrestling or Brazil...

Dominate Grips & Get the Takedown in BJJ with Ankle Pick
In this video I show a simple way to use the Ankle Pick in BJJ to counter stiff arm grips with the gi.
If you've ever been in the middle of a good match then you know the grips can get really frustrating to deal with.
In this video I answer a question from our friend who says that when he rolls from the feet his opponent's are just using a straight stiff arm to keep away. It makes his ability to do takedowns difficult.
His question goes on to ask about how to do an ankle pick using the ...

Double Leg Counter in BJJ if You Can’t Sprawl (Butterfly Guard Sweep)
In this video I show one of my favorite Double Leg takedown counters for BJJ using Butterfly Guard. I also include a clip of me rolling and using this defensive technique during a Brazilian Jiujitsu practice.
When someone shoots in for a solid double leg takedown. The sprawl is definitely an option. But sometimes it's going to require a lot of energy to do, or perhaps I'm just too slow. That's where this double leg takedown defense comes in handy.
As I'll show you in the video. When you f...

Effective Adjustment To Finish a Failed Takedown in BJJ
Going for a takedown in BJJ can be tough for newer grapplers that are limited with takedowns. I know that many of my students struggle with this and I've received tons of questions from people who want to go for takedowns but are afraid to attempt it and get smashed.
In this video I share a really simple tip to finish a single leg when you're sprawled on. If you watch my body position you'll notice that I'm not in direct danger of kimuras or guillotines which is important for those of us t...

Effective Setup for Peruvian Necktie (And 2 Submission If It Fails)
In today's technique video my Black Belt buddy James Clingerman shows a sneaky Peruvian Necktie setup and finish from the front headlock position when defending a takedown. I'm not much of a peruvian necktie person, but James has a lot of success with them so I wanted to snag a video with him showing one.
In the video he'll show the set up if you're defending a basic shot and then going from the sprawl into the submission.
If you'd like more techniques and submissions centered around the ...

Low Single Leg Takedown For BJJ (The Setup & Options For Grappling)
Today's video is with a Black Belt I met down in Florida Will Abreau. In the video he shows a nice ankle pick technique you can use for BJJ training or competition. Will wrestled in college and has also competed in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions a ton. In fact, if you look around at some of his tournament videos you'll see this exact move being used. It's a great technique to bring some wrestling into your BJJ.
In the takedown tutorial he'll show some basics on how to set it up and what h...

How To Use a Butterfly Guard Sweep as a Takedown in BJJ
Today's video features a way to use a Butterfly Guard sweep as a takedown. I also show how to transition to Single Leg X Guard if it fails. This particular takedown is one of my go-to techniques from the feet in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu rolling and competition.
I like it because if you go for it and it fails it lands you in a strong Butterfly Guard position to work for a sweep or submission. This allows you to really go for it 100%. Whereas if you go for traditional wrestling style takedowns or ...

3X Wrestling Champ Shows 1 of his Best Takedowns That Works in BJJ Too
Today's video is wrestling style takedown taught by one of my new students and 3X NAIA college wrestling champion Brandon Reed. You may have seen him in some of my rolling videos before. He just finished up his last year of college winning his 3rd heavyweight wrestling title and has started BJJ training with us. Scary right?
In the video he shares one of his favorite techniques in wrestling. The ankle pick. It's a super basic, fundamental, takedown in wrestling that is plenty useable in Braz...

This Effective Takedown Addresses A Big Problem In BJJ When Standing
Today's BJJ technique is one of my absolute favorite takedowns for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I demonstrate the technique in both gi and no gi.
One of the big reasons I love it so much is because many BJJ practitioners have a very passive and defensive stance with takedowns. Usually this is where their butt is waaaay back. This makes it hard for shots and takedowns.
So in today's video I'll show you how to do an arm drag to inside trip that I've been able to hit at just about every BJJ competit...
