Shawn Stevenson grew up on the north side of St. Louis, Missouri. He was a track-and-field standout in high school with realistic professional ambitions when, at age twenty, he was diagnosed with a degenerative spinal disc disease that the doctors told him was permanent. The athletic career was over before it started. The decade that followed, in his telling, was the worst kind of slow-motion train wreck — chronic pain, weight gain, depression, and the dawning realization that the health-care system he had trusted to help him had no actual plan beyond managing symptoms.

At some point in his mid-twenties, he stopped waiting. He went back to school at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, studied business, biology, and nutritional science, and started experimenting on the only person whose health he had any real authority over — himself. Over roughly two years he reversed the course of the disease through a combination of nutrition, sleep optimization, exercise, and stress management. The X-rays of his spine before and after are part of his keynote talks now. He cofounded Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a wellness consulting practice for individuals and organizations, and started telling the story of what had worked.

In 2013 he launched The Model Health Show. It was a small podcast in a quiet corner of the iTunes health and fitness category. Twelve years later it is the #1 health podcast in the United States, with millions of downloads each year and a guest list that reads like a Who’s Who of modern nutrition and longevity science — Mark Hyman, Drew Manning, Sara Gottfried, Daniel Amen, Pedram Shojai, Cate Shanahan, Jay Shetty, Jim Kwik, and dozens more. His first book, Sleep Smarter (Rodale, 2016), grew directly out of his own experience. The 2024 reissue (with a new foreword from Dr. Sara Gottfried) is the canonical edition.

Eat Smarter (Little, Brown Spark, 2020) was the breakthrough. It became a USA Today national bestseller and made the case — supported by hundreds of citations to peer-reviewed studies — that food is not just calories. It is information. Specific nutrients flip metabolic switches; specific foods control your sleep, your hormones, your memory, and your cognitive function; and specific eating strategies measurably affect how long you live and how well you live during it. The Eat Smarter Family Cookbook (2022), co-written with his wife Anne, took the same science and turned it into a hundred actual recipes for real households.

Beyond the books and the show, Shawn is one of the most-quoted voices in mainstream health journalism — Forbes, Fast Company, The New York Times, Muscle & Fitness, ABC News, ESPN, and Entrepreneur magazine all turn to him when they need a sharp, accessible quote on nutrition or sleep. He is also one of the few prominent voices in the space who has been consistently public about the role race, food deserts, and economic policy play in American health outcomes — a perspective shaped by where he grew up, which he has never tried to soften for a more comfortable audience.
