About Wayne Dyer — Father of Motivation, Spiritual Teacher, 40+ Bestsellers | Self Growth Videos

Wayne Walter Dyer was born May 10, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan into a home defined by absence and instability. His father abandoned the family when Wayne was two. His mother couldn’t care for three boys alone, and Wayne spent most of his first decade shuttled between orphanages and foster homes on Detroit’s east side. He never met his father — a fact that would shape the rest of his life and, eventually, a graveside reconciliation that he said broke him open spiritually.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy out of high school, served four years, then used the GI Bill to work his way through Wayne State University — earning a B.A., an M.A., and ultimately a doctorate in educational counseling. He became an associate professor at St. John’s University in New York and a licensed counselor in private practice.

In 1976, while still teaching, he published Your Erroneous Zones — a plain-English guide to breaking self-defeating thought patterns. His publisher printed a modest initial run. Dyer drove across the country in a station wagon, walking into bookstore after bookstore and convincing owners to stock a few copies. The book eventually sold more than 35 million copies and became one of the best-selling self-help titles of the 20th century.

He never went back to the classroom.

Over the next four decades he wrote more than 40 books, 21 of which became New York Times bestsellers. His PBS pledge-drive specials — Your Erroneous Zones, The Power of Intention, Change Your Thoughts — Change Your Life, Wishes Fulfilled, I Can See Clearly Now — raised millions for public television and introduced his work to audiences who would never have walked into a self-help section of a bookstore. Oprah called him the father of motivation. Deepak Chopra called him a pioneer.

Dyer’s early work (1976–1995) was practical cognitive-behavioral counseling dressed in accessible language: challenge your limiting beliefs, take responsibility, stop blaming your parents. His middle work (1995–2004) turned spiritual — manifestation, intention, the invisible connection between thought and outcome. His late work (2004–2015) went deeper still, into Taoism, the Tao Te Ching, and the surrender of the ego. Change Your Thoughts — Change Your Life was the product of a full year spent reading, meditating on, and rewriting the 81 verses of Lao-tzu’s 2,500-year-old text.

In 2009 Dyer was diagnosed with leukemia. He lived with it publicly for six more years, traveling, speaking, and writing. He died at his home in Maui on August 29, 2015 at age 75. His final book, Memories of Heaven, was published posthumously.

Dyer’s central teaching, repeated across forty years and forty books, was small: you are not your thoughts, and your thoughts are not fixed. Change what you pay attention to and the life that follows will change with it. He is an entry point for anyone who needs the doorway before they can find the deeper teachers behind it.
